October 2015 We have started the new year working hard to learn the standards the states has put forth for us to learn. Children are coming in every day working hard to get better at what they have already mastered. In ELA we just completed our unit on main idea and supporting details. We are now working on learning about different kinds of context clues that students can use to help them understand terms that they don't completely understand. At the same time we are also working to strengthen those convention needed to be good readers and writers. We have just started the Writing to Win program with the writing process. This has been a good extension for the journal writing that we started to do last year, and have continued this year. We are finishing up the first full process. In Reading we will continue working on fluency and comprehension skills through our literature circles and full-group discussions. Main idea, cause and effect, making inferences, and visual information are a few of the important areas we will be learning more about. In Math we started learning about the concept of multiplication. The first thing we will consider with multiplication is what part factors and multiples play with the process. Next, we will learn about the operation required to multiply: namely partial product and algorithm. Finally, we'll, use what we've learned about the operation and apply it to real-life scenarios with tasks and word problems. An ongoing theme, especially at the start of the year, is Math fluency. In particular we are strengthening those quick operation skills, as well as, learning Math facts through 10 x 10. In Science we have been learning about Ecosystems. Students learn about biotic and abiotic parts of the ecosystem, as well as the specific parts of a community of living things. Students will learn about what animals need to survive in their environment. They will, also, learn about issues that may lead to scarcity and extinction in some animals, and how animals adapt to changes in order to survive. We'll soon be learning about how weather plays a part in the water cycle. We have been learning about physical and man-made features in Social Studies. The Gulf of Mexico, Great Lakes, Atlantic Plains, and Continental Divide are just a few of the features that students are learning about. We will soon learning about how these physical features affected the lives of Native Americans, and, later explorers who were in America. I have been working in Meriwether County for my entire 20 year career. I enjoy working with the students from the same area which I live. This is my tenth year of working at MVES. I graduated from Mercer University in Macon in 1994 with a Liberal Arts degree in secondary education/history. I later attended Columbus State University to add on certification in P-5 and Middle Grades Education. I also, have a Teacher Support Specialist certification that I earned through West Georgia RESA. While at George E. Washington Elementary, in 2004, I received Teacher of the Year recognition for the school, as well as for Meriwether County. My wife, Cathy, and I live in Meriwether County with our two children. Elizabeth (Beth Ann) is a fifth- grader at MVES, while Logan is in the second grade this year. I have enjoyed serving as one of the MVES Academic Team coaches for the last nine years. I look forward to working with your child and you to help each child to aim high, achieve, and work toward graduation. It is a privilege to teach your child this year. |
